Being a celebrity is great, they sit around getting interviewed all day, do photo shoots, and make a ton of money. Unless you're famous only for being famous (we won't name names), most celebrities are actors, athletes or reality stars. Basically they work hard when the paparazzi aren't around and can even find themselves in more dangerous situations than you'd think.

Gerard Butler is the most recent celebrity injury, as he's now recovering from a surfing accident from last week. The accident happened on set of his upcoming movie "Of Men and Mavericks," which he stars in with Jonny Weston and Elisabeth Shue. Butler was filming a surf scene while playing his character Jay Moriarty, a surfer who died in a free-diving accident at the young age of 23.

Butler was surfing in a dangerous area at Mavericks, where a rookie surfer named Jacob Trette almost died this past January. Trette's accident was similar to Butler, who was dragged over the rocks and was held underwater by two large waves. The violent location was one of Moriarty's favorite, so it was natural to film a scene in the Northern California surf spot.

Gerard Butler was rescued by coastal patrolmen and taken to Stanford Medical Center after the event. He was later released a bit shaken up but not seriously injured. Butler had been training with pro surfers, who were brought in to consult on the set of "Of Men and Mavericks." Among them were Peter Mel, Zach Wormhoudt and Greg Long.

While the studio and production crew failed to comment on the event, it's been long known that the destination is for more advanced surfers. Not only do rookies have trouble, but in 1994, Mark Foo, a veteran surfer died while surfing there. Luckily for Butler, the set seemed to have taken as many precautions as possible, including pro surf consultants and most likely an EMT or ambulance on standby. When it comes to surfing, you can never be too safe.

Other than the accident, it seems the movie production is going well, it is being directed by Chris Hanson, who directed "The River Wild," and is due in theaters next fall. For rookie and veteran surfers alike, safety should always come first when surfing. For more accident news and information, visit our San Antonio personal injury attorney blog at Davis Law.
